Garden Tour

CYCLE PORTLAND, SIGHTSEEING TOUR, GARDEN TOUR A different view of gardens around the east side of Portland, this bike ride takes you through the manicured neighborhoods of Eastmoreland and the landscaped mini-gardens of Ladd’s Addition. The Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden and the Reed College campus are across from each other. Downtown Sellwood has beautiful hanging flowers and sidewalk gardens, while along the Springwater Corridor wetlands and wildflowers abound. Begin at the TriMet Rose Quarter MAX Station and bike ride through the urban area of the Lloyd District, over I-84 and into bike-friendly neighborhoods. The streets are wide and the only real traffic you’ll encounter is at busy intersections. The Clinton Street Theater will be on your right after you turn onto SE Clinton Street. This is the location of the annual film festival, Filmed by Bike, when the cycling community comes together to celebrate bicycling, and amateur film-makers flex their creative muscle. A bit down the road is the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden on the right and Reed College on the left. Both are worth a little time to explore the season’s abundance of flowers. Reed College is located on a campus reminiscent of small town New England Colleges with its brick buildings and grass courtyards. After turning at Eastmoreland Gardens onto SE 27th Avenue, your ride will take you along residential streets with beautifully landscaped homes and colorful play structures tucked between the road and the golf course. Your return trip through quaint Sellwood will bring you back to the East Esplanade via the multi-use pathway of the Springwater Corridor. Side Trips Eastmoreland Golf Course, Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden, Oak Bottom Refuge, Oaks Amusement Park and Roller Rink. Also worth a visit is Washington Park where the Japanese Garden, Hoyt Arboretum and the Oregon Zoo can be found. FOOD AND DRINK There is a coffee shop at the transit center and restrooms and drinking fountains just before the Hawthorne Bridge on the East Esplanade and again at Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. Sellwood Center has numerous retail establishments. ACCESS By car, take Naito Parkway to the Steel Bridge north; left onto North Interstate Avenue. The Rose Quarter is on the left. Parking can be found either behind the Rose Quarter building on the right or on-street parking. By public transportation, take any Red, Blue or Green TriMet MAX train to the Rose Quarter. All lines intersect at this point.
