Cycle Melbourne, Mountain Bike Ride, Peninsula Traverse

This ride climbs gently from the Port Phillip Bay area, along the spine of Mornington Peninsula, then descends gradually towards the coast of Western Port. There is quite a variety of trail types along the way and it is a journey with a destination for lunch or coffee. Crossing over the peninsula also gives you an introduction to some of the less well-known areas and you pass close to several other rides we have.

Eatons Cutting is the easiest route up to the peninsula high country. It is a relatively smooth dirt fire trail closed to traffic and most riders will find it an undemanding middle ring climb. This is followed by a stretch of road side singletrack then a hard surfaced shared use trail to Red Hill.

After Red Hill there us a gradual descent on the old railway line alignment. The rail line was designed to move produce rather than people and it gives you some idea of how productive the land used to be. The main crops you see today are wine grapes with a smattering of small orchards. Arriving at Merricks General Store, you are transported to a different era as the building itself retains the charm and decor of history.

The return trip follows the outbound route and ends with a very pleasant down hill run on Eatons Cutting.

Access

The ride starts at Eatons Cutting, Dromana, on the Mornington Peninsula, about one and a half hours’ drive to the south-east of Melbourne (Melway map 160). To get there from Melbourne, turn off the Mornington Peninsula Freeway at Dromana, then turn left onto Boundary Road. Eatons Cutting is unsigned and is just past the entrance to Dromana quarry. Eatons Cutting has a steel gate. Please do not obstruct the gateway; park opposite on Boundary Road.

Food and Drink

Nothing at the start. Merricks General Store, the outbound destination, is well worth a cyclist’s appetite for food and coffee! A visit to Stoniers Winery next door will reveal the taste of a brilliant sparkling white wine and alter your awareness of the uphill parts of the ride back home.

Side Trip

If you do this ride on a Saturday, Red Hill market is on your route and it’s really well worth a visit. It runs on the first Saturday each month from September to May 8am to 1pm. Melway 190 J4. Telephone (03) 5988 4424
