Cycle Melbourne, Mountain Bike Ride, Arthurs Seat Singletrack Loop
Simple navigation and a surprising amount of singletrack combined with views and contrasting vegetation makes this ride feel longer than it is. It starts with a section of road side singletrack before a non-technical descent brings you to a twisty singletrack loop and a slightly more technical singletrack through pines adjacent to a disused quarry. Parts of the singletrack run down through an avenue of thick bush giving a sense of speed.
Most of the ride is on the north slope of Arthurs Seat and because of good drainage and soil type, the track is good to ride any time of year and there is plenty of shade in summer. There are some lovely views of Port Phillip Bay as you descend and an option to make a short detour at 2.8km to see the beautiful OT Dam.
The local MTB club, Red Hill Riders, is negotiating with Parks Victoria to develop more singletrack networks in this area. There is a very short section beside Boundary Road before more singletrack and fire trail climbing up Eatons Cutting. Just ahead of the 9.1km turn there is a very serious downhill course which is well worth a look if you want to get some idea of what an experienced downhill rider is capable of. See Ride 68 for details or disconnect your computer and ride a few hundred metres ahead from the 9.1 mark and check it out from the bottom part of the course.
Eatons Cutting is a non demanding middle ring climb that brings you back to your car and fine coffee and cake in the nearby café. If you are a fit rider wanting a bit of a workout this ride is ideal for doing several laps.
Red Hill is on the Mornington Peninsula, about an hour and a half south east of Melbourne; Melway 190 E3. Start of ride is at intersection of Arthurs Seat Road and Mornington-Flinders Road (same start as Peninsula Wines, Ride 72). If you are planning to ride close to school start or finish times, please do not park near the school.
