About East Kowen Forest

As well as being Canberra's largest commercial pine plantation, Kowen Forest is very popular with organised recreation groups including orienteering, bush walking, running, mountain bike riding, horse riding and car rallies.

Kowen Forest was originally layered with trails to host the 24 Hour Mountain Biking Championships but now the trails have developed way past the preliminary twenty trails that make up a 24 hour lap. Therefore, there are a wide variety of trails that cater to all levels of mountain biking.

Travelling from Queanbeyan, head east, cross the river, and then make a left onto Yass Road. Drive for about 3km and then make a right onto Sutton Road for two kilometres and then make another right into Kowen Forest.

If you already know the access combination you can drive through the gate and then head out another 5km down Kowen Road and turn left at Subaru Rally. Here you want to drive around the overpass and head towards the Kowen homestead site. You can get the lock combinations by calling 13 22 81.

The scenic and popular Old Kowen Homestead Recreation Area campground is suited to large organised groups and is a great base for events. The campground is accessed via a dirt road 10 km behind locked gates.

Bring your own drinking water and firewood. Fires are only allowed in the permitted fire pits.

Campers should be aware the campground is surrounded by an active pine plantation with heavy machinery. Please remain within the campground for safety reasons.
