About the Southern Tablelands

The Southern Tablelands is a diverse region of NSW comprising five Council areas adjoining the ACT, and offering a unique country experience, complete with traditional and exceptional customer service, and supported by a range of great services and facilities you need for a memorable cycling holiday in the region.

  • Goulburn-Mulwaree
  • Upper Lachlan
  • Yass
  • Queanbeyan-Palerang
  • Hilltops
  • All five regions are located within easy reach of Canberra and each offers strengths primarily in their plethora of quiet country roads, offering unsurpassed road and gravel riding opportunities linked by traditional country towns with heritage architecture and sightseeing opportunities aplenty.

The area is characterised by high, flat country, predominantly cleared and used for sheep and catttle grazing. The architecture of the townships dotted throughout this region are testament to its history and legacy. As you ride this area, enjoy the country pubs for a meal or to stay overnight; traditional tea and scones or a good, old-fashioned milkshake, at one of the many cafes en route. Take it as slowly or as fast as you like and soak up the beautiful and iconic Australian grazing scenery along the way.

The region is perfect for road riding and gravel grinding. Here, you can ride through picturesque undulating countryside, avoiding the more trafficked and direct routes, for a great touring cycling experience, of whatever length you desire. Visit in autumn for a special treat of colour blazes with fiery oranges, brilliant golden yellows and deep ruby reds. Cycling this countryside is the perfect way to really experience the countryside, at a pace that allows you to truly appreciate it, and to really soak up all the colour, sounds and smells along the way.

In many of the townships you pass through, careful renovations have paid tribute to the grandeur of days gone by, while opening up new local and visitor experiences as cafes, accommodation, museums and heritage homes for you to visit.

Add to this the splendour of country cooking, cool climate wines and traditional ales. Meander by bike through the Southern Tablelands’ towns and villages and make the most of the relaxed pace of the country lifestyle. Stay a night or two, or more!
