Trees of Canberra Guided Ride - 13th and 14th October 2017

Enjoy the gardens and trees of Canberra by bike in a relaxing 1/2 day guided tour in the middle of spring. Join cycling guidebook author and former forester Bruce Ashley on a guided cycle tour of the wonderful treed avenues, parklands and open spaces of the National Capital at the height of Spring. He will take you to Canberra's first Arboretum established by Charles Weston, and to other key locations in Canberra where particular tree selections have given places the character that they have today. The tour includes: * a visit to the arboretums of Canberra that helped shape the tree selection, including Weston's Arboretum (Weston Park/Royal Canberra Golf Club) and Yarralumla Nursery (Friday ride only) * the world-renowned National Arboretum * the major tree avenues of inner Canberra * commentary on the treed avenues as we ride along them: what trees are, why they were selected, their characteristics * a picnic lunch among the trees (weather dependent, otherwise cafe indoors) and light refreshments at a break mid-ride. The 30km ride will start at Regatta Point, head around the Central Basin of Lake Burley Griffin before crossing over to Barton, and through the inner south of Canberra using quite tree-lined streets. In Yarralumla we will visit the nursery, Weston Park (former arboretum commenced by Charles Weston), then on the bike path around the southern foreshores of the lake before heading up to the National Arboretum. From there it's past the cork oak plantation then a loop over and around Black Mountain and a detour into the National Botanic Gardens. There is a short section through the ANU and its quiet treed boulevards before heading back to the start at Acton Ferry terminal and bike hire. Cost for the ride is $90 per person (not including bike hire), with a minimum group size of 6 riders, and maximum group of 15 riders. We will help organise a bike for you. Bruce will be running 2 tours - the first on the morning of Friday 13th March (when the Yarralumla Nursery is open) and again on the morning of Saturday 25th March. Contact Bruce for more details regarding times, availability of bikes and any other matters that you need.
