Cycle Canberra, Sightseeing Ride, Gungahlin Loop
Nothing is better than spending time with your family on the weekend. Sometimes, though, it can be difficult to find a nice place to enjoy family activities together. Enter: the Gungahlin Loop. This ride promises to bring you one of the best family rides in Australia Capital Territory.
The Gungahlin Loop is a safe, quiet and relaxing ride with underpasses diverting you under most roadways and avoiding traffic. The ride provides a pleasant outlook as you travel past the Gold Creek Country Club with views of Canberra across the golf course.
There are slopes here and there, but overall it is an easy riding route.
The ride starts and finishes at Gungahlin Pond; though you could commence it from any carpark dotted around the Lake.
From Canberra, travel north on the Barton Highway and turn right onto Gundaroo Drive. At the second roundabout, turn left on to Candlebark Close – you can park at the end of this road.
Food and drink
The Gungahlin Lakes Club Restaurant is right there to serve you. Visit this nice and spacious restaurant for a great meal. Don’t forget to try their specialty – the Riverina steak selection, or simply order a pizza or hamburger. If you just long for a “humble” meal, then have a sip of barista-made coffee or trigger your appetite with sandwiches, cakes and sweet treats.
Moreover, the restaurant has menu for kids as well as a play room, which is perfect for those who ride with their children.
Starting at Gungahlin Pond, the route passes the 18th hole of the Gungahlin Golf Course and then heads right, crossing Lexcen Avenue. From there it travels the bike path as it loops through suburbia.
As you approach the Barton Highway, you will pass the entrance to the Gold Creek Village. With plenty to see and do, this is a great side trip for the family. There is a wide shoulder for cyclists along the Barton Highway, and after just a kilometer you rejoin the bike path. At the underpass head left and continue along the path until you return to your starting point.
Also, it should be noticed that this bike trip is better suited to families with older children.
