Yale Loop is a neat little bike ride that circles through Irvine’s Woodbridge Village, a charming neighborhood designed in New England’s Cape Cod style. Large, attractive houses and mature trees line the road and lend a peaceful air to this outing. Don’t be surprised when you find yourself riding the loop multiple times.
At the heart of this loop are two improbable bodies of water named North and South Lake which are surrounded by serene landscape, wandering paths, and attractive parks. There is little to no on-street parking in this part of Irvine and with this in mind the ride starts on Yale Loop, across from the entrance to Windrow Community Park, where public parking is available. No street parking means wide bike lanes and throughout this ride you will find that the on-street bike path is nearly the width of car lanes.
The two lakes are the center of Woodbridge Village. Calm and serene, they always seem to be impossibly blue and the green grass so much greener. Ducks and geese wander about, the occasional turtle peers at you and you find a pleasant calmness about the lakes. There is something pleasantly bucolic about this suburban neighborhood. The lakes are surrounded by miles of bike trails that bisect Yale Loop.
The easiest way to access the trails are at 1.08 miles at the South Lake or at 3.87 miles for North Lake. Although the lakes are private, fishing is allowed (license required) and the web of bike paths are open to all. Located between the two lakes is Woodbridge Square shopping center which is connected by bike paths to the route, the lakes, and the many parks. In fact, the bike path runs straight through the heart of the shopping center, cafree.
By bus, OCTA route175 makes a stop at the Windrow Community Park. By car, take exit 4, University Road, off of Interstate 405 heading north. Travel for 0.6 miles, the road will change its name to Jeffrey Road. Turn left onto Alton Parkway, then right on East Yale Loop. Turn right into Windrow Community Park.
Food and drink
At the center of the loop, Woodbridge shopping center is your best bet for food. Options range from Ruby’s Diner to a bit more upscale Champagne French Bakery. Another option is El Cholo’s, located in Alton Square shopping center.
