Park and Pedal - Black Mountain (Caswell Drive) to Belconnen

One of the most underused carparks on the western side of Black Mountain is located adjacent to Caswell drive. It has numerous carparks and is well located to go to to Belconnen, Gunghalin, Woden or the City! This ride to Belconnen is mainly on dedicated bike paths, only occasionally crossing the road. The views along the way are fantastic, passing through a couple of nature parks.

When riding a bike you should always be aware of the environment around you and the status of the path and route. Caution is required and you should not rely on the information on this web page to protect your safety. Our information is to help guide you on the direction - but it does not contain a comprehensive listing of all the safety issues you may face. In Canberra, there are animals such as kangaroos that sometimes wander onto the track including kangaroos and branches and loose matter such as sticks, rocks and soil. Likewise, you should be vigilant at all intersections and if you need to travel on the road, please be aware of all your surroundings including people potentially opening doors in front of you and cars approaching intersections. Defensive riding is recommended at all times.

Many Canberrans live too far away from work to regularly commute by bike the whole way. The ACT Government's Park & Pedal initiative allows Canberrans to drive their car part-way to work, park their car for free, and pedal the remainder of the journey. Park & Pedal complements other part-way active travel schemes already underway in the ACT including the Park and Ride and Bike and Ride facilities. The first Park & Pedal location in the ACT is being trialled at the Lindsay Pryor National Arboretum carpark on Barrenjoey Drive, just off the Tuggeranong Parkway. This is an ideal location as it is only 30 minutes comfortable ride from the City and Woden, and also from the National Triangle and Barton precincts. A coffee van is located at the carpark every morning between 6:30am and 9:15am. The scheme here in the ACT is an Australian first, drawing on the success of similar schemes internationally, including in the US, Canada and the UK. In Boston, there are now more than 30 carparks identified for the Park & Pedal scheme, with the numbers of people choosing this option continually growing. Further details can be found at -

Bike cages are secure shelters available to MyWay cardholders who simply swipe their MyWay card to open the door and can place their bike on one of the racks inside. Bike lockers are the most secure option when combining bike and bus travel. Passengers are required to supply their own lock to ensure the locker remains secure. Bike rails are installed at over 15 bus stop locations. You will need to provide a secure lock. Most Blue Rapid and Red Rapid buses are equipped with bike racks that hold your bike while you're travelling by bus.
