Park and Pedal - Black Mountain (Caswell Drive) to Belconnen

One of the most underused carparks on the western side of Black Mountain is located adjacent to Caswell drive. It has numerous carparks and is well located to go to Belconnen, Gunghalin, Woden or the City! This ride to Belconnen is mainly on dedicated bike paths, only occasionally crossing the road. The views along the way are fantastic, passing through a couple of nature parks.

Ride Considerations

When riding a bike you should always be aware of the environment around you and the status of the path and route. Caution is required and you should not rely on the information on this web page to protect your safety. Our information is to help guide you on the direction - but it does not contain a comprehensive listing of all the safety issues you may face.

In Canberra, there are animals such as kangaroos that sometimes wander onto the track including kangaroos and branches and loose matter such as sticks, rocks, and soil. Likewise, you should be vigilant at all intersections. If you need to travel on the road, please be aware of all your surroundings including people potentially opening doors in front of you and cars approaching intersections. Defensive riding is recommended at all times.

Hi,

I have been using the Aboretum car park (which is not a 30 minute ride for newbie cyclists into the parliamentary triangle), but this park and pedal seems to be shorter route into the parliamentary triangle.

My query relates to folks travelling from the northside to park their car, it is not clear how to access this car park, i.e. is it best to exit at Aranda or does one need to exit at the Lady Denman drive and come back around (noting this is nightmare exit and thereby negating the benefits of riding as one is stuck in exit traffic).

Given this car park is not well utilised, some information on how to access before getting to the ride stage would be rather helpful for folks considering using it.

Thanks, Jane

Hi Jane. Thanks for visiting the site and thanks for the feedback. We will update the site with your suggestion on better outlining access to the car park as well as the time.

Coming from the north, I would access it via William Hovell drive. Depending where you come from North side - I would typically recommend to access William Hovell via Bindubi Street. I hope that helps.
