Westgate Singletrack

Overview

This ride challenges the senses! Giant cargo ships glide past just meters away, the massive West Gate Bridge curves above you and the heart of the city is just down the river. The track flows freely with just enough tight turns and vegetation sections to make it an interesting ride. You can also access the wider gravel-based trail network in Westgate Park, making this an ideal venue for a family group or an opportunity to introduce a novice to the fun of singletrack.

Green singletrackThe singletrack loops around an under-developed section of Westgate Park near a disused rail line and underneath the massive West Gate Bridge. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the section where you dart through a stand of young trees. There is also a pump track adjacent to the singletrack course.

The more ‘scenic’ and family-friendly side of Westgate Park can also be accessed directly from Todd Road. Here you can enjoy wider paths, some sealed, which visit ponds, providing sanctuary to migratory birds. Thanks to ongoing efforts to revegetate and improve habitat.

Terrain

The course is not highly technical but it has enough tight turns to make it real fun at speed. Wide singletrack with a mall stretch of bike path.

Access

The ride is located quite literally, underneath the West Gate Bridge. Access the start via Todd Road exit from the West Gate Freeway, then Lorimer Street. The ride starts at the corner of Lorimer and Sardine streets, Port Melbourne. You can also access this via the bike path from the city.

From the corner of Lorimer and Sardine streets, head along the bike path underneath West Gate Bridge, then almost immediately turn left onto a double track going through a grassy area. The singletrack loop starts to the right shortly after.

Food and drink

Closest shop is the Todd Road service station passed as you exit the freeway. Toilets and water available at Westgate Park.

Into the woodWe’ve mapped a simple loop route to get you started, plus an alternate finish that exits the park at Todd Road. From there you can continue on the stunning coastal Bay Trail that traces Port Phillip Bay, dotted with bike-friendly cafés and amenities along the foreshore.

You will not need directions to enjoy this course. It is simply a matter of following the track. Small changes to the course occur at times as part of continual maintenance.

Races are held here regularly on Thursday evenings. Contact Full Gas Promotions for details. If you come here with the family, take advantage of the easy riding on the wider trail network on the northern side of the bridge as well as the bike path heading to the city.

For a side trip, try out the pump track at one end of the singletrack network. Follow the service track alongside the bridge, cross a (disused) railway track, and continue about 200m further on. Look out for some rubber tires – they indicate you have arrived at the retaining wall to part of the pump track. Use the bike punt service to cross the Yarra to access Williamstown or the Maribyrnong River bike path. You can also ride into the city via the bike path at the start. For information about the bike punt operating times, visit Westgate Punt or ring 0419 999 458.
