West Ashley Greenway

South Carolina, Charleston, West Ashley Greenway

The West Ashley Greenway is an approximately 10-mile bike trail located in West Ashley, just outside of Charleston, South Carolina. The greenway runs from the South Windermere Shopping Center to Johns Island, follows the Highway 17.

Not too bumpy, the first several miles from South Windemere are paved, but the rest is a sort of compacted earth with some sparse gravel that is absolutely perfect for hybrid or mountain bike tires, but fine for road bikes too as long as it is dry.

From downtown Charleston, take US 17 west across the Ashley River Memorial Bridge. After passing the bridge for a half mile, take a left onto Folly Road. At the second light, turn right on Windermere Boulevard and go to the South Windermere Shopping Center. You can park beside the trailhead on the north side of the shopping center.

Otherwise you can approach the western (Johns Island) terminus. Head south on US17, turn left on Main Road. Ride for about 2.5 mile and you will see the entrance on the right. Turn right, then keep pedaling right onto McLeod Mill Road. The trailhead is on the left-hand side with parking.

More details

West Ashley Greenway is a favorite of local mountain bikers. This trail will take you on 8-mile ride from suburban Charleston west to the scenic Lowcountry wetlands that that surround this charming city. Since the dirt gives way to rough gravel and narrow bridge crossings, it is necessary to have a mountain bike. This trail provides incredible view and bird sightings, and sometimes you can catch a sight of tidal flow which carved lacework channels. The agricultural heart of the region, Johns Island is the nation's largest producer of tomatoes. In fact, much of the fresh produce served in local restaurants hails from this rural community. Note that when you get closer to the Main Road end, you will go through nice woods sections, an open farm section, and then a gorgeous marsh area that is hard to explain but definitely worth the trek.

This trail is peaceful and has great views of and all types of birds. It is nice and wide and not too crowded, so you rarely have to tell people to move over.
