Old Hartley Road - Duluth Traverse

Old Hartley Road - Duluth Traverse

Overview

Old Hartley Road is a multi-use trail. This section of the Duluth Traverse is not singletrack specifically built for mountain biking, but instead, it's a wide, flat path that gets heavy pedestrian use. Please check your speed and yield to pedestrians, strollers, wheelchairs, etc.

Terrain

This path is 10'-15' wide, flat, evenly-graded, and dressed with crushed rock.

Access

It is not singletrack built with mountain biking in mind, but it provides access to/from many excellent singletrack options!

If you are southbound, from the Hartley Nature Center parking lot, follow the signs for the "Duluth Traverse" west.

If you are northbound, park at the Hartley ski trail parking and keep straight from Harley Road, connecting to the trail.

More details

When you travel from Hartley Nature Center, remember to stop for a peek at Hartley Pond on your right before following the signage to the left (south).

Roughly 500' from the train intersection near Hartley Pond, there are some unmarked trails on the west side of this trail that will lead you up to the top of the "rock knob", a bedrock outcrop that provides a beautiful panoramic view of the surroundings and a glimpse at Lake Superior.

Continuing south the path crosses a large lowland where there are several wide wetland-boardwalks. Near the southern end, on the west, is the entrance to Root Canal. Continuing to the southern terminus you end up in a residential neighborhood.
