The Anniston Trailhead to Rock Slot and Back

The Anniston Trailhead to Rock Slot and Back

Overview

A fairly friendly trail that brings you up Tortoise, Chilowhee, and runs through a bit of Bomb Dog Loop. On this specific track, you can come back down the exact way you used, but skip Tortoise and complete on Hare – a 2-mile descent.

Located in southwest of Anniston, the trail is popular among local riders.

Terrain

Pretty smooth singletrack with several long, quick, flowy descent.

Access

The trail is accessible from the Coldwater Mountain Bike trail, Anniston Trailhead.

Food and drink

No eatery along the way but you can surely find some in West End-Cobb Town after the ride.

More details

Climb the Tortoise for a short pretty easy section. At the top of it, you will find a junction with Trillium – a downhill trail that transitions to Hare. Keep going straight up Chilowhee to the large intersection Rabbit Hole. Here make a left turn and ride on the second portion of Chilowhee. Enjoy the amazing view to the South while the trail is flattening out along a ridgeline.

At the fork, turn right and follow the route to arrive at the Bomb Dog climb and make a left turn. Bear on this easy ridgeline climb until you reach a fireroad. Have a sharp left turn and ride into a rocky end to the Rock Slot climb.

Rock Slot is a huge rock garden. When you come to that section, turn right onto the fireroad and roll down to find a trail on your right. Head back on the trail that running the same way you rode up.

Otherwise, there is another option when you come to Rabbit Hole on the way down. Take Trillium trail to ride to Hare/Tortoise and Chilowhee/Trillium intersection. Ride Hare to the bottom when you see the intersection of Hare and Tortoise.
