Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon is a lagoon in the district of Lagoa, an area of affluence in Rio de Janeiro that contains many parks and green spaces. The route meanders around the lake, one of the most beloved places of pedestrians and cyclists.
The 6-mile route is pleasant and airy, and bound to please with its fresh wind and rustic kiosks, not to mention the antique Lage Parque, iconic greenery of the city and with a unique view to the Christ statue, right at the end of the trip.
This calm and serene lagoon is a nice option for beginners and leisurely riders. Enthusiasts with more energy can extend the ride by climbing straight to Christ the Redeemer from Lage Parque.
The lakeshore route is perfectly smooth and flat with shade and way-finding signs. The section connecting Road Jardim Botanico with the green space is stone-paved and gradually steepens, taking about 15 minutes to climb it up to the park.
The lake paths can be accessed from any direction. This map below suggests riding from the north of the lagoon (where you can also find many parking lots), finishing the loop, and then pedaling up to the park.
Food and drink
Treat yourself to a cup of coffee and a hearty breakfast in the courtyard of the classical Plage Café. Pick one among some of the best restaurants in Lagoa: Gula Gula, Mr. Lam, Guacamole, so much to enjoy, so little need to be said!
Lagoa is said to be a tranquil and scenic neighborhood, and it's true! Beside beautiful pathways, live music by the waterside is also a big attraction here.
You can grab a snack from a kiosk along the way, rent a bicycle, or hire a swan-shaped boat to explore the lake on water. Parks, food courts, sports spaces, hills, name anything you need for an enjoyable trip, this ride is sure to satisfy.
