Girona to Mare de Deu del Mont

Overview

Girona’s strategic location between the Pyrenees and Costa Brava in Spain is the key to magnificent views and points of interest. Anyone who enjoys road cycling and remarkable landscapes will be spoiled here by the large network of roads covered with beautiful nature of this city.

The superb trip from Girona to Mare de Deu del Mont is a good representative of what the place has to offer. A long trail links Girona to Saderness – home to the sanctuary and monument on mountain – and to the tranquil lake of Banyoles.

The road starts from near the stone bridge, and follows one of the symbolic climbs of Girona – the 11-mile Mare de Deu del Mont. This challenging ascent makes the smooth, friendly ride more “playful” with its length and the steep last 1-mile stretch, though it is relatively steady in terms of gradient.

People in very good shape will enjoy this endurance ride. It takes a full day to complete the 80-mile ride, to reach the peak and pass the beautiful lake on the way back to Girona.

Terrain

The whole route is on nicely-paved road. Except for the technical climb in the middle of the ride, it is fairly flat and flowy. SO you get a bit of everything.

Access

The ride starts at where the Place de Catalunya connects to Avenue de Sant Francesc.

Food and drink

There are plenty of options on the way, as you go. There is also a restaurant on the top Mare de Deu del Mont.

More details

Banyoles is an ideal place for food and drink before easily rolling back into town.

There is a sculpture of Jacint Verdaguer overlooking the snowy Pyrenees Mountains, and the restaurant at the top offers a wonderful terrace looking out over the Garrotxa mountains, all the way to the Costa Brava.
