Hualien to Taitung – Highway #9 & #11 via Highway #30

Overview

Another option to travel between Hualien to Taitung.

Highway #9 and #11 both offer fantastic views, one features mountainous sights, and one reflects the glistering water of the Pacific Ocean. We bet some of you can’t make up your mind which route to take. So how about combining those two to make an entire trail with both alpine views and sea breezes?

By utilizing Highway #30, you can have the best of both worlds. For the first half of the ride, the beauty of East Rift Valley will capture all your attention before stepping down to let the stunning coastline views take over the ride. However, you are also asked to have good physical strength as well as riding experiences as the terrain of Highway #30 is a little demanding. Still, this route might be the best one for those who love to see many attractions along the way.

Terrain

Though you avoid the most difficult section of Highway #11 (the climb near Niushan) and enjoy half of the ride on flat terrain, the real challenge only begins when you enter Highway #30. The terrain is a little tricky at this part which takes you through mountains.

Access

The ride starts from Hualien Train Station in Hualien.

Food and drink

You’ll find many eateries along Highway #9, while the catering service is less dense in Highway #11.
