See Cape Town from a different view on this fantastic route around the city. By using a mixture of dedicated bike lanes and shared roads, Around the City offers you a fun and safe short cycling trip which can be completed within two hours (or more, depending on you). You’ll cycle between Cape Town’s City Bowl, the Waterfront, Greenpoint, and Seapoint. Along the way, there are many interesting places to visit such as the Iziko Museum, the Two Oceans Aquarium, the Oranjezicht Farm Market (featuring an ample bike parking area right at the main entrance), and the famous Sea Point Promenade of Cape Town. And don’t forget to stop by one of the city’s favorite bike-friendly cafes and make some new friends too!
Around the City is an easy ride. The terrain is pretty flat with just some occasional short climbs.
You can start this route from either direction or anywhere along the route. If you follow our map, the starting point is at the Truth Coffee Roasting on Buitenkant St.
Food and drink
You may be worried about where to eat or where to find refreshments while you’re cycling on some routes, but not this one! There are tons of bicycle-friendly cafes on the ride, so feel free to choose your favorite spot to stop by for a cup of coffee, a delicious dish, and chit chat with your fellow riders and locals.
Most of the bicycle-friendly cafes are in the Fringe District and Bree Street & Waterkant Bike-friendly precinct which is in the heart of the CBD.
- You can take a bus to or from the start or finish point. MyCiti bus allows bicycles without charging. However, you need a Myconnect card to use the service and try to avoid peak times since the bus is too full for your bike to fit inside.
- You can extend the route by cycling along the Sea Point Promenade. This route is traffic-free and offers a great place for cycling, walking and playing. Also, the route features mesmerizing vistas of the city, sea, and mountains. So don’t forget your phone or camera, you’ll regret it if you do.
- Apart from Oranjezicht Farm Market which offers bike parking, Waterfront also offers areas for parking bicycles. You can find it outside the Forum and the Watershed buildings and outside Entrance 1 of the Main building.
- MUST KNOW: Unfortunately, cycling is not allowed on Government Avenue as it is a pedestrian-only area, you will need to walk your bike through the gardens.
