Plav-Gusinje offers a wealth of awesome cycle tours and bicycle adventures in the foothills of the Prokletije National Park in south-eastern Montenegro. It’s an off-the-beaten-path up and coming bicycle tourism destination that you’ll want to add to your bucket list! And to get there before everyone else does!
Plav-Gusinje is a small region; Gusinje has a population of around 1,600 and Plav around 4,000. ‘Plav’ is derived from the meaning ‘a flooded place’, and aptly sited on the River and Lake Plav.
Historically visited for hiking experiences in the Prokletije National Park, the combined Plav-Gusinje region is starting to boast some of the best cycling trips and is a top cycling destination for your next bike trip.
With relatively quiet roads and stunning mountainous scenery, the area offers a wealth of road, gravel and mountain biking experiences.
Our recommendation is to base yourself in one of the key townships of Plav or Gusinje and spend 3-4 days exploring, returning to ‘base-camp’ each night and enjoying the picturesque townships with the great array of accommodation and dining options provided. Many Balkan speciality dishes, including the main-stay ‘cevapi’ are readily available, for a taste of the local cuisine. A sweet shop is located on the main street, with cakes and baked goods to fuel you bicycle adventures.
The two townships are located about 12km apart, with a great circuit of 30km to connect the two and return back to whichever start point you had, cycling through the picturesque valley.
The area’s key attractions are, of course, the Prokletije National Park as well as the Ali Pasha Well Springs. The Springs are busy on 2 August each year, with festivities and activities marking Gusinje’s Independence Day. There are also many other Karst wells throughout the area, worth visiting by bike. Other bike trip options include adventures to the region’s picturesque and mountainous lakes.
Located at an elevation of approximately 1,000m above sea level, the climate of Plav-Gusinje is such that your best times to visit are in May and October where there's a pleasant average temperature of around 20-25 degrees celcius and not a lot of rain. The months in between are hotter, making cycling a bit more challenging.
The rainy season is Oct-Feb and best avoided by bike.
