This is a great ride, on the back doorstep of the nation's capital, but yet a world away. It's easily do-able as a day-trip right from Canberra; or make a weekend of it and stay the weekend at the Captain's Flat Hotel. It's a great weekend experience, so close to home and yet so far away!
The ride route takes you through the beautiful Tallaganda National Park and State Forest, and along pastoral lands with sweeping, majestic views across the countryside. It's a great escape!
As you make your way across Parlour Creek Road, you'll have a decent climb over a length of around 10km, of a Cat 2 climb. However, as with any climb, you'll then be rewarded with a descent finish back to Captain's Flat.
This one is primarily a great gravel grind, with around 20% of the total ride on sealed roads (Captains Flat Road) and a short section (approx 8km) on a slightly rougher fire trail, but quite do-able by gravel bike, as well as mountain bike.
There's plenty of car-parking at the community oval in Captain's Flat, together with public toilets and water.
FOOD AND DRINK
There's no food or drink options along the route; but grab a coffee en route from Canberra in Queanbeyan or Bungendore as you drive out. Bungendore is a slight detour, but we reckon the coffee from either the Food Lover's Cafe and Market or The Gathering is well worth the detour.
The Captain's Flat Hotel has a great pub menu where you can grab a post-ride meal.
