Wingello Red Trail

Cycle Sydney, Mountain Bike Ride, Wingello Red Trail 

The Red Mountain Bike Trail is a fantastic mix of around 10km of purpose built single trails interlinked by fire roads which vary from double track to well graded . Each section of single trail has its own subtle flavour and has been given names like the Grate Wall and The Tangles. At a touch over 24km in length and with some decent hills it makes for a good day in the saddle.

The Red Trail is roughly 24km in length and has around 10km or so of purpose built single track broken roughly into three sections. I found the single trail sections to be extremely well bedded in with a lovely smooth rolling surface making for some fast and flowing riding. Technically the single trail only contains a few minor obstacles and should be rideable by just about all except absolute beginners.

Advanced riders will appreciate the beautiful flow of the trail and its excellent design allows you to dramatically increase the difficulty level by simply cranking up the speed. Bring those legs however as there are some rather nasty hills in this ride making it most suitable for riders with average fitness and above. You’ll also encounter a few hefty air-giving waterbars on the Red Trail’s fire roads, so take care out there. Wooden trail markers have been placed at regular intervals along the trail making navigation extremely easy.

As with most rides it should be avoided after periods of heavy or prolonged rain to protect the trails from damage. Also the main road to the trail head is dirt and may become impassable after rain. Riders on the Red Trail are entering a remote area and should be totally self sufficient and carry enough water and spares to complete the ride.

From Sydney take the M5. Turn left into Bellambi Road. At Wingello cross the train line and turn right and then left onto Forest Road and follow this into the Wingello State Forest camping area and trail head.

Food and Drink

No food and drink is available at the trail head however a café and store is located at nearby Wingello township.

Side Trip

The Blue and Yellow Trails leave from the same trail head, so by all means do all three!

  • 0.0 From the trail head locate the first trail marker and the trail heading off in a roughly easterly direction.
  • 0.6 Turn left into fire trail.
  • 2.6 T-intersection with fire trail, turn left.
  • 3.3 Trail splits, Spratts trail continues on straight ahead do not take this, follow the main trail around to the right and uphill through pine trees.
  • 3.8 At top of climb turn left into Spratts Rd.
  • 4.1 Look for concealed fire trail off to your right heading downhill.
  • 4.8 Turn left into ‘Grate Wall’ single track.
  • 7.3 End of Grate Wall single track. At open and Tintersection turn right into fire trail.
  • 8.1 At intersection turn left into Nyes Creek Rd heading downhill.
  • 8.6 At T-intersection turn left.
  • 10.6 At T-intersection turn left into fire double track which becomes fire trail.
  • 10.8 At T-intersection turn left.
  • 10.9 Note trail marker indicating start of the ‘Banksia Drive’ single trail and turn left into single trail.
  • 11.5 At intersection with fire trail turn left.
  • 13.0 Trail splits into Y, take left hand fork and note trail marker up ahead.
  • 14.3 Junction with fire trail, turn left. Note green arrow, following this leads back to the trail head.
  • 15.7 At T-intersection turn left.
  • 16.1 Turn left into single track.
  • 17.7 At end of single track section turn right onto fire trail.
  • 20.1 At end of ‘The Tangles’ turn right onto fire trail.
  • 20.2 Turn left into single trail.
  • 21.8 At end of single trail turn right onto fire trail.
  • 22.08 At T-intersection with fire trail turn left.
  • 22.7 Turn right into long downhill.
  • 23.4 Turn right and then immediately left into fire trail
  • . 23.8 Just before junction with fire trail look for small trail off to your left and follow this back to the camping area.
