Goldfields Track: Leanganook Track - Castlemaine to Bendigo

CYCLE VICTORIA, MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDING, GOLDFIELDS TRACK: LEANGANOOK TRACK: CASTLEMAINE TO BENDIGO

The Goldfields Track is a point-to-point 210km Track that takes mountain bikers and bushwalkers through some of central Victoria's most historic towns and beautiful forests.

The Leanganook Track (60km) from Castlemaine to Bendigo is the third installment of the Goldfields Track.

It can be ridden as the last leg of the Goldfields Track or as a stand alone ride. The Leanganook Track (60km) from Castlemaine to Bendigo has yet more ever changing spectacular scenery. From the granite tors around Mt Alexander to the golden plains near Bendigo. Heritage abounds on this track, from gold rush relics, to the still in use engineering marvel that is the Coliban Water System.

This portion of the track is relatively non-technical.  A suggested itinerary is below:

  • Castlemaine to Harcourt (19km).
  • From the spectaculuar Chewton bushlands you head towards the amazing Goldfields heritage site of the  Garfield Water Wheel.  From there you can find the native woodlands of the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park and then roll into the Harcourt valley.
  • Harcourt to Springs Road (16km)
  • As you climb back on the bike, you can either take your bike over Mount Alexander (its a big climb!) or riders can go via Harcourt and around the Mount on the Coliban Main Channel.
  • Springs Road to Bendigo (23km)
  • This is a relatively relaxing portion of the ride that goes through the Sandhurst Reservoir.  The route passes old mines rand old water channels.  You then enter Bendigo.

At Bendigo Train Station you can jump on a train and head home, or spend some time checking out Bendigo’s many and various attractions, or maybe turn your bike around.
