Goldfields Track: Wallaby Track - Mt Buninyong to Daylesford

CYCLE VICTORIA, MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE, GOLDFIELDS TRACK: WALLABY TRACK - MT BUNINYONG TO DAYLESFORD

The Goldfields Track is a point-to-point 210km Track that takes mountain bikers and bushwalkers through some of central Victoria's most historic towns and beautiful forests.

The Wallaby Track is a 90 km track from Mt Buninyong to Dalyesford and is the first installment of the Goldfields Track. It can be ridden as the first leg of the Goldfields Track or as a stand alone ride.   The Wallaby Track is the longest leg of your Goldfields Track adventure and will see you take on almost every type of mountain bike terrain imaginable.

From an ancient volcano above the gracious township of Buninyong, the Wallaby Track heads through the heart of stately Ballarat, plunges into a gold rush era churned landscape and on to Norman Lindsay’s home town of Creswick. From there, it’s uphill past St Georges Lake and rolling pastoral countryside ringed by volcanic hills to contour next to the state’s longest timber tramway system and a traverse through an impressive one kilometre long railway cutting on a long abandoned railway line. More tall forest with a side trip to Sailors Falls delivers you to the cluster of mineral spas waiting for weary bodies and feet at Daylesford and Hepburn Springs.

A suggested itinerary is:

  • Mt Buninyong to Ballarat (20km).  This section offers great family friendly riding into the centre of Ballarat.
  • Ballarat to Creswick (25km).  This is where it starts to get difficult and you'll need alot of fitness to get through this as you head into the Dividing Range. There are some fantastic, beautiful singletrack through open native forest. You can re-fuel in Creswick for the fun ahead.
  • Creswick to Wombat Station (29km).
  • This is alot more rolling and includes some bitumen riding through.  You will also find some great singletrack in the Wombat Forest.  Take a break at the Wombat Station rotunda, built on the grassy platform of a long gone railway station.
  • Wombat Station to Daylesford (19km).  Get ready for more climbing.  It is greener in these parts.  Rehydrate at the Sailors Falls mineral springs.
