911 National Memorial Trail: Garrett to Johnstown

Whether coming from the north or south on the GAP, there are food and lodging options close to Garrett (Rockwood to the north, Meyersdale to the south). Turning off at Garrett, the route towards Shanksville gently climbs 22 miles to the Flight 93 memorial.

The quaint town of Berlin is near the mid point. Gianni's Pizzeria is a terrific little pizza/sub shop in Berlin PA.  The White Horse Brewing Company is open for beer tasting and sale most evenings, also in Berlin.

The Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville, is run by the National Park Service and serves as one of the three core sites for the September 11 National Memorial Trail. This emotionally powerful site of national significance already is frequently visited by bikers, using a southern entrance close to car traffic, and access by lightly traveled roads though rolling farmland. Unique among national park service facilities, the memorial at the crash site, and the dignity of the visitor's center, make this an unforgettable experience.

Exiting the Flight 93 memorial, the trail continues to climb through back roads bordered by fields filled with cows and wind turbines. A challenging climb leads to the town of Windber, where the Windeber Hotel provides craft beer and good food at reasonable prices (though currently not open for overnight lodging).

The final 10 miles of this segment into Johnstown PA offers a combination of challenging hills and increasingly urban riding, ending in a city with numerous lodging and food options.

To note: some localities are improving the route in their jurisdictions; the map may lag behind some of these update.
