Mount Tarrengower Downhill Course Four

Cycle Melbourne, Mounain Bike Ride, Mount Tarrengower Downhill Course Four

There are four downhill ride options to choose from at Mount Tarrengower, each offering different technical challenges. Three have been designed by local riders and the fourth is a fire track. All the rides finish at the same point where toilets and parking are available. You can expect some natural obstacles such as rocks and a few logs plus some high speed berms and jumps.

Mount Tarrengower (585m) is on the outskirts of Maldon. A sealed road gives easy access to the summit which has a viewing tower and fantastic views of the surrounding country. On a clear day you can see for 60km and the tower lookout compass identifies all the prominent landmarks.

The sealed road to the summit makes it easy to arrange a car lift to do another ride. Make sure you wear protective clothing and ride within the limits of your experience and ability. You don’t need a ride log to take these downhill routes – just follow the track from the start points listed below.

By car: Maldon is 15km west of Castlemaine, less than two hours northwest of Melbourne via the Calder Freeway. (Melway X609 B5). From Castlemaine, take the C282 into Maldon, go through town then turn left onto Mount Tarrengower Road and park at the summit.

Food and Drink

Plenty of options in Maldon, no facilities at the ride start.

Side Trip

Maldon is a fascinating place to visit. It is the best preserved town from the gold rush days with many authentic buildings from that era. It is the sort of place that invites you to slow down and wander along the main street that feels like a movie set. It is a highly popular destination for vintage cars and motor bike clubs.

The lookout tower at Mount Tarrengower affords tremendous views – check it out while you’re there.

Ride Log

Ride Four is the Fountain Fire Track. Start past the lookout tower and Fountain Track sign. This is a fast, relatively non-technical four wheel drive track giving a very different downhill experience. Keep left at the Anzac Hill sign then left again at the next. A bit of sealed road and small uphill gets you back to the same finish point as the other downhill options.
