Cycle Melbourne, Mountain Bike Ride, Steavenson Falls
This is a very beautiful, simple out and back ride from Marysville to the famous Steavenson Falls on a trail with a compacted stone surface. It is a perfect example of the type of ride that is hard to find, ideal for family groups or for riders just starting mountain biking. The trip out to the falls is gently uphill with some steeper parts that will give you a chance to use the little gears.
Not demanding on a technical level, this ride allows you to appreciate the beautiful scenery as it unfolds. If you knew Steavenson Falls before the fires, you will notice the contrast and how much more you can see. There is a real sense of new life in the bush with vibrant colours contrasting with stark remains of the forest. The experience is extraordinary as you pass through an avenue of tree ferns and the remains of giant mountain ash destroyed in the fires. Landscape around the falls now has a different beauty with much of the forest undergrowth taking prominence, especially the ferns; and trees sprouting new growth.
The distant views are enhanced. Reconstruction work around the falls is of high quality and expected to be open in 2012. Please ride with caution on the return trip to Marysville as it is downhill most of the way. Riders and walkers could be around the next bend! If you are a novice, try this track a second time. It’s the perfect ride for honing your skills.
