The Goldfields Track, Bendigo, Australia, Mountain Bike Trail
The Goldfields Track is an established pathway that leads visitors through central Victoria's hidden treasures from deep gorges and fern-lined rivers, to the artefacts and cultural heritage of the greatest gold rush the world has ever seen.
A 210km shared use bushwalking and mountain bike trail follows the top of the Great Dividing Range from Mt Buninyong just out of Ballarat to Bendigo, allowing bushwalkers and mountain bikers time to savor central Victoria’s unique combination of gold rush heritage and natural beauty.
Linking the great goldfields cities of Ballarat and Bendigo, the Goldfields Track is a one of kind. Originally created by a community-owned organization, the Great Dividing Trail Association (GDTA), the Goldfields Track links the old gold rush towns at the heart of Victoria, as well as the forests, hills and lakes, straddling the Great Dividing Range.
This is a long trail with a variety of terrain and elevations. There are various climbs and descents to tackle, also some rocky parts.
The Goldfields Track is actually three interlinked tracks. You can choose to start from which you like: The Wallaby Track, the Dry Diggings Track, the Leanganook Track.
Food and Drink
On the way you'll pass through Creswick, Daylesford and Hepburn Springs, Castlemaine and Harcourt - and a number of tranquil and picturesque hamlets besides. These local villages offer a wonderful array of experiences - accommodation, restaurants, cafes, wineries, galleries, spa and special shopping.
The track takes you from Ballarat in the south to Bendigo in the north. The trail is broken up into three interlinked tracks:
WALLABY TRACK (90kms) from Mt Buninyong (20kms south of Ballarat) to Daylesford. Much of it contours what was once a productive, working forest on top of the Divide. Starting at Mt Buninyong offers some great family friendly options, otherwise, make your start the Ballarat Railway Station.
DRY DIGGINGS TRACK (60km) from Daylesford to Castlemaine, is arguably one of the best stretches of single track in the country. From wet temperate forests on top of the Great Dividing Range to the drier northern plains near Castlemaine.
LEAGANOOK (60km) from Castlemaine to Bendigo has yet more ever changing spectacular scenery. From the granite tors around Mt Alexander to the golden plains near Bendigo. Heritage abounds on this track, from gold rush relics, to the still in use engineering marvel that is the Coliban Water System.
