Victorian High Country

Do you love hill climbs and a new challenge? Our latest recruit Anna and her partner Christo together with their road bikes and the family dog, traipsed into the Victorian High Country for a Christmas bike ride. Their challenge, attempting to combine the two challenges of the Rapha Festive500 and the Ride High Country 7 Peaks challenge to conquer at least 500km over the eight days between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, whilst also conquering the 7 peaks of Mt Buller, Lake Mountain, Mt Hotham, Dinner Plains, Mt Baw Baw, Mt Buffalo and Falls Creek. Oh, and they threw in an extra climb, just because it was (kind-of) on the route and the second rated haute route climb in Australia.

They combined their love of hill climbing by road bike with their love of healthy, nutritious Christmas ‘real food’ and discovered the best protein recovery drink along the way! If you have no other reason to ride a bike at Christmas time, you might want to consider cycling just to use the excuse to rejuvenate with Anna’s Australian eggnog recipe below!

Their trip also demonstrates the power of #BicycleTourism - by using the most of a 10-day break to tour further afield from their hometown of Canberra. The challenges themselves, particularly the 7 Peaks, inspired them to stay longer in the area than originally intended to complete the challenge.

Here is a suggested itinerary of their ride which includes places to eat and drink and some accommodation options. This is by no means an exhaustive list, just some places Anna stopped at along her adventure. To see the whole story, you can visit the full photo library and narrative. They obviously had an amazing time and will no doubt be back for more in their quest for new and inspiring challenges!

If you would like to know how you can undertake a similar trip of this area, please contact Anna@cyclelifehq.com and visit our Victoria High Country Destination page to discover more.  Bright and Surrounds have gone out of their way to make cyclists welcome. Trust us, you won’t be disappointed – mountain biking, road cycling or sightseeing and sampling amazing local produce by rail trail – they’ve got it all covered!
